Eco Divers work with other organisations as well as self-initiated projects. We are currently establishing ourselves within the local community and building awareness of our marine activity. Watch this space for the latest news.
October: Several dives on Freshwater net were encouraging as no animals (dead or alive) were located. This net is our main training net. October: Ecodivers Dave and Helen attended a seagrass monitoring workshop run by Manly Council. We will be actively monitoring the unique seagrass areas of North Harbour. This will also include water quality testing. October: Ecodivers have been busy working with marine scientist, Dave Harasti, tagging, monitoring and surveying seahorses at manly. October: Ecodivers have gone "Totally Wild"... Helping out with underwater video and divers for several segments, highlighting the work of volunteers along the coast, which will go to air during "Coastcare Week"... The first week in December. Saturday 22nd September: Dedicated vessel "Eco Diver 1" arrived and will be in the water following some modifications. Friday 21st September:It's not just the beach nets that take a toll on harmless marine life. Researchers from Sydney Institute Marine Studies (SIMS) released a Port Jackson shark and a large Blue Swimmer crab from the exclusion net at Parsley Bay, a large Flat Head was not as fortunate but an opporunist octopus benefitted from the catch. Eco Divers have released several sharks and fish from pool nets but have also located dead sharks, rays and a blue groper. Thursday 20th September: During an Eco Divers specific training course with NPA Marine, the 100th Coast Keeper, Jayne Jenkins was certified as a fish surveyor. A founding member of Eco Divers, Jayne completed her course with two survey dives at Shelley Beach watched by NPA Marine patron, Valerie Taylor. Course Instructor David Roe (also a member of Eco Divers) also allocated Coast Keeper/Harbour Keeper numbers to Rory, Tanya, Fiona and Megan, some of the 15 Eco Divers who attended the earlier workshop. Sunday 16th September: Eco Divers join Coast Keepers for the third clean up at Illawong Point. Approx 100kg of fishing line and other rubbish was removed from the water by nine volunteer divers including Dave, Jenni, Sacha and Steve. This area, located in a national park, is a popular fishing spot and has paid the price with literally 100s of kms of fishing line covering the bottom like a carpet! This is an ongoing clean up project supported by Eco Divers. It isn't just marine animals that suffer the consequences but the all the fauna surrounding the area is at risk from entanglement with numerous birds found dead (caught up in fishing line). Friday 14th September: Eco Divers took Greens politician Ian Cohen out to Freshwater shark net, fortunately there was nothing caught in the net but the southern end was folded over on the sea floor. Thursday 13th September: Eco Divers Dave, Evan, Rory and Steve, checked the net closest to Cabbage Bay Marine Reserve and found a pair of Cow Nosed Rays entangled. The larger female was dead, the male was released and hopefully survived. These two small animals (wing span - 1.2m) had reduced the net to a tangled mess on the bottom. (see pics / video) Friday 31st August: Eco Divers joined Harbour Keepers and Plunge Diving at Chowder Bay to take underwater photos for their recently recieved Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Community Business Partnerships! Thursday 30th August: Eco Divers spoke at media launch of Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund (SACF) "Shark Net/Bycatch awareness project". Greens politican Ian Cohen, actress Veronica Sywak and pioneer diver Valerie Taylor also spoke in support of the project. Eco Diver, Sacha Dench freedived in the tank with a mock net, within minutes a sharkray had entangled itself within the net, but was freed easily as the net was specially designed for the event. |
