ECO DIVERS - SEAGRASS …
NEVER HAS SEA GRASS BEEN SO SEXY
We are just realising how important a role this plant plays in the marine environment, it also has great benefits for us on land too!
Locally we find 3 major species:
Halophila Ovalis or paddle weed
Zostera Capricorni or eel grass
Posidonia Australis or strap weed
They are all sea grasses not seaweed [macro algae] and are flowering plants much like those above water ! Locally they live in depths to 7 or 8 metres as they require light to photosynthesise… Their major roles in the ocean are [not in any order of importance]:
Providing a nursery area
Stablising the sea floor
Absorbing run off / nutrients
Absorbing C02 and giving off oxygen
A food source for a myriad of animals
